--:/DWP007/ FUNERAL GOAT - "Mass Ov Perversion":--

From the darkest depths, from the deepest caverns ov unexistence, the unholy prayers for the coming ov the Lord echo and thunder high and low. Eternally dedicated to the glory of our Master, FUNERAL GOAT is a channel of His will. This unholy entity, summoned by His loyal servants, - HerrAIDS and Ludas - manifests itself in a form of pure Orthodox Devilworship! No beautiful melodies, just pure religious exaltation and Satanic devotion. Influenced by and dedicated to such prophets, as VON, Beherit, Archgoat and War, FUNERAL GOAT spreads the Gospel of Ancient Black / Death. Primitive and raw, yet entrancing and hypnotic chants, played solely for His glory and in His name!

Raw primitive Goatworshipping insanity! Unleashed by DWP on CD on the 14th of august 2009 and early next year on a noble gatefold LP, including 2 exclusive bonus tracks. Officially licensed to Ars Funebris (FRA) for a tape edition, strictly limited to 100 copies, released in 2011 (AFR046).

Mass ov Perversion

It seems the masterminds behind Holland's black metal overlords, Sauron, had to find an outlet for the primitive and raw bestial lust they harbor inside. And Funeral Goat is just that demonic hell-beast. It features the duo of Ludas and HerrAIDS wreaking feral devastation upon our ears. The album begins with an incantation of demonic vocals before the beast is unchained on Praise the Beast. Echoing gravely vocals and dirty monotonous riffing saw through flesh in a similar manner to VON's primordial style. Murderous savagery claws at my ear drums on 666 and the unrelentingly underground riffing brings to mind Sarcofago's Brazilian onslaught. Dead Angels picks up immediately where 666 left off with muddy, thick guitars writhing rhythmically on the muddy floor in abject supplication to the horned god. Death Hymn is more hypnotic VON references, especially in the vocal pacing and the echo effects. The track is a straight line from beginning to end with only one minor riff change that doesn't distract from the monotone feel of the song. Conjuration is much more varied and references some of the more atmospheric Beherit or perhaps some early Samael work though still remaining completely raw and primitive. The pacing of the song gives the feeling of a lumbering golem, unfeeling and singular in its intent. Calling Forth the Storm is a pitch-black assault of Christ-immolating black metal whose rapid pace is suffocating. Each of the 13 tracks here is a relatively rapid assault that is over within but a a couple of minutes. Funeral Goat is barbaric and raw. They rely on a simplistic yet ruinous approach that will appeal strongly to fans of early South American work or those who worship modern stuff in the vein of Archgoat. Mass ov Perversion will eviscerate you and leave you crying in agony in the damp earth.

It was a pity that Dutch Sauron called it a day, yet understandable. Two members of that band, singer/ guitarist Herr Aids and drummer Ludas, have now released a debut album under the name of Funeral Goat with the title ‘Mass Of Perversion’. It is different from Sauron, yet I do think that those who loved Sauron wil have their way with Funeral Goat as well: the band plays an old school form of death/ black metal, including the old school Satanist image, which is received very well in the underground. As a matter of fact, on ‘Mass Of Perversion’ we are taken back to the roots of the two musicians that form this band.

Funeral Goat: a cliche name which fits only to genuine old school death/ black bands in the vein of cult acts like War, Blasphemy and in the slower passages Hellhammer. In such matters a cliche name is only fitting if the music is right, and it is. The band plays that old school music which is only cherished by a small number of diehard underground fans, and as such I don’t think this scene will ever make it to a larger audience. On the other hand, I think musicians in this corner of the genre will care less… With the subtlety of a shovel overrunning a Dixi-toilet at a festival site the band, aided on occasions by Mortifer (known from amongst other Galgeras), rage through thirteen short tracks in less than thirty three minutes. So it is obvious that we are dealing with very short songs, yet without unnecessary fillers and useless subtle breaks which would not fit to this kind of music anyway. Yet to prevent the album from becoming a sonic blur, the two gentlemen manage to drop in slow passages at the right spots in the running order to avoid becoming bored. As such, the ultra heavy and slow ‘Conjuration’ and the band’s title track ‘Funeral Goat’ (my favorite on this album) are fine examples.

In a genre without renewal it all comes down to the way it is done, the attitude and the overall production (a sound like the early eighties with its noisy demos is not acceptable these days anymore): Funeral Goat understands this very well, and by doing so I must admit that the band obviously stands above the average level of the masses. In that way, ‘Mass Of Perversion’ has become a fine album to those who believe that the scene has not yielded anything interesting and furious enough for like fifteen years or so…

The debut release from Funeral Goat, it comes with a nice booklet that folds out as an inverted cross, it is the small details that does it, it looks great! So far so good... now to the music: It is raw and good black metal! The songs are rather short, you can count that yourself (32 minutes divided on 13 tracks...). The variation is really good here, sometimes it is rather slow, sometimes it sounds like rock n roll black metal, sometimes it is just fast, raw black metal. This kind of variation might result in a very torn album but that is not the case here. Even thought the songs vary that much it feels like a really solid album. It is all very well performed, the sound quality is really good. There isn't really much more to say about it. A really good debut album, I will definitely keep my eyes on this band. This record will keep on spinning in my stereo, that is for sure. So I definitely recommend this album! Buy or die!

The debut CD release from my longtime local satanik brothers of Funeral Goat, comes with a nice booklet that folds out as an inverted cross. The cd looks fucking killer just like the music of these two ex band-members of Tilburg black metal squad Sauron (R.I.P). Funeral Goat sounds oldskool as fukk in the early: South American and Scandinavian vein. Inspired by gods such as: SACROFAGO, BEHERIT, BATHORY,VON and HELLHAMMER! Total satanic goat worshipping including lots of tempo ranges and possessed vocals from the deepest pit of hell! Best black metal album of the last century and definitely a must for every hellbanger around!

Last year, when SauroN, one of the main Dutch blackmetal bands, announced they would stop I wasn’t pleased at all. But fortunately now there is a reason to get a satanic smile again, because the loss also gave birth to something new.
Funeral Goat is a band from 2 ex SauroN members: drummer Ludas and vocalist/guitarist Herr AIDS (bassplayer in SauroN). Musically Funeral Goat is far more primitive than SauroN. Their music can be compared to acts such as Blasphemy, VON, Beherit and WAR. Funeral Goat manages not to sound as a copy of these great acts, but gives them a massive tribute with ‘Mass Ov Perversion’.

You could expect Herr AIDS and mister Ludas not sitting on their asses for to long. Both have a long history in the Dutch underground, for example, consider the dead and buried act SauroN. The satanic influences are continued on this debut album of Funeral Goat. And it’s always nice if a cover tells you exactly what to expect. Old school black metal, under a new moon.

There is not a lot to tell about Mass Ov Perversion, but what there is to say is sure worth the trouble. This year we already got Beherit and Archgoat performing the Hellhammer spirit and now also Funeral Goat. Completely in line with unrelenting and hateful black metal, Funeral Goat is doing his thing. Hordes of Finnish bands like Behexen are now accompanied by these lowlanders. With just fucked up vocals (this is positive), deadly drum sound and shrieking guitars they manage to play decent and raw, primitive black metal.

This is nothing new. But the fact is that Funeral Goat manages to summon memorable songs. Call it atmosphere or spirit, but listening to songs as Death Hymn or the titletrack makes you, unconsciously, pull a dirty and nasty face. Nothing nice at all. And that makes it successful.

Nice work of a band that will have a bright, blackened future. Welcome O dark perverted Goat!

Funeral Goat - Mass ov Perversion (2009)

Mass ov Perversion is the debut from the side project of two Sauron members. Since Sauron is one of the best Dutch black metal bands in existence, I held my expectations for this material rather high. Two men drinking and writing songs about Satan and goats. What could go wrong?

Not a lot does go wrong here. The tracks all feature old school riffing with a lot of fuzzy overdrive on the guitars, reminiscent of Hellhammer and early Mayhem. HerrAIDs' vocals are dominant, and they alternate between gruff choking and more tormented black wails. It's a good thing the vocals create such a sloppy fun to the tracks, because the guitars don't do a lot, preferring to hash out simplistic riffs we've all heard before. A few of the tracks such as "Kiss the Goat" and "Calling Forth the Storm" get pretty intense and powerful, but stylistically they do not stand out from the rest of the album.

Mass ov Perversion is beefy, the fuzzed out guitars cruising over blast beats while the charnel vocals of HerrAIDs bark off into the Satanic night. Being that they are in Sauron, they have little to prove here. Funeral Goat is going to appeal to fans of really raw, old school black. It's messy and charming, grim and nocturnal!

"...Remember when Black metal needed to be raw, primitive and just full of so much verb that everthing echoed to the gates of hell? Well, this is what Funeral Goat is. There is not much to say here other then Bestial warlust, Beherit and Mythos would be damn proud to add them to there collective of madness!"
